Struggles against Special Economic Zones are labeled as ‘anti-development’ by middle class India. Yet Goa’s recent anti-SEZ campaign was led by educated professionals, activists, the church and media, forcing the state government to backtrack. The SEZ is an independent foreign territory with no local or government control, say Goa’s champion campaigners.

The Energy and Resources Institute in its recent report has criticised Coca-Cola in India. The findings say that the company is responsible for contributing to further depletion of community water resources in already water scarce regions. It says at least one of the bottling plants should be either closed or relocated.

India generates around 300,000 tonnes of e-waste annually, which is likely to grow more than five fold by 2012. In a recent ranking guide, environmental body Greenpeace has called upon Indian electronics companies to adopt green practices to deal with the e-waste menace so as to come at par with global brands.

In western India, jaladindi (a water procession) is undertaken by a local doctor every year to spread awareness on keeping rivers clean. It was felt that people would relate better if it was linked to the 800-year old spiritual tradition of a march for the realisation of life’s noble values.

Even after the ban on its use, the hazardous impact of pesticide Endosulfan sprayed in cashew plantations in Kerala, continues to affect the communities. The state government's relief package of Rs 5 million and other schemes have proved inadequate to rehabilitate the victims.

Diperlukan keberpihakan pemerintah kepada kaum petani di Bali agar mereka dapat ikut bermain di wilayah pariwisata yang menjadi urat nadi perekonomian Bali. Mestinya pemerintah memfasilitasi para petani agar bisa mengakses kebutuhan pangan ke pasar pariwisata. Kalau ini bisa dilakukan maka diyakini petani akan lebih sejahtera.

Impoverished regions of South Asia will be hit first and hardest by climate change, along with southern Africa, say scientists. Under the circumstances the best strategy for agriculture is diversity not monocultures. Solutions from outside are unlikely to work so there will be a need for localised approach.
