Gli esperti informano che sono 2,6 miliardi le persone nel mondo a non avere accesso a servizi sanitari adeguati e a dover fare i conti con le malattie che ne derivano come la diarrea che uccide 2 milioni di bambini ogni anno. Tra le questioni sul tappeto quella dei biocarburanti: la prospettiva è infatti che l'acqua possa essere sempre più impiegata in futuro per produrre i cereali per le bioenergie, invece che a sfamare le popolazioni.

07.08.2007 L'Unicef ha lanciato un allarme sul rischio di "un'incombente emergenza sanitaria per milioni di bambini" in Asia meridionale a causa delle piogge monsoniche che hanno lasciato milioni di persone isolate e in urgente bisogno di acqua, cibo e riparo. "Se gli aiuti non arriveranno nei prossimi giorni l'emergenza sanitaria potrebbe riguardare interi villaggi" - riporta l'Unicef. Anche la Caritas ha attivato le sue sedi locali, ma avverte che sono stati segnalati a Roma dei "falsi volontari" che chiedono offerte per le iniziative a favore delle popolazioni colpite. A oltre una settimana dalle peggiori alluvioni monsoniche che abbiano colpito l'Asia meridionale il Bangladesh, l'India e il Nepal sono ancora sconvolti dalle repentine inondazioni che hanno colpito circa 30 milioni di persone e il piano di distribuzione degli aiuti sta subendo forti rallentamenti per le pessime condizioni delle strade.
